When you start packing for your Las Vegas trip, you need to consider the time of year you'll be there and what you will be doing. You may be surprised to learn that the weather in Vegas is not the same year-round and you will have to pack some sweaters for chillier desert nights, especially during the winter months. Once you have your plans in order, you can start packing with the following tips in mind.

Keep It Casual

If you don't plan on hitting up the clubs or eating at fine dining establishments every night, you don't need to be concerned about getting too dressed up. Feel free to dress casually as you explore Vegas, meaning nice jeans or slacks with a collared shirt for men and a casual dress or slacks for women. At casinos, the dress code is also casual during the day though it becomes a bit more formal in the evening.

Regarding footwear, keep in mind that you'll probably do a lot of walking on the Strip, so you'll need comfortable sandals or walking shoes. These will be your main pair, but you should also pack some casual dress shoes or a pair of heels, just in case you go to a show, nightclub, or a nice dinner.

Packing for the Seasons

Summers in Las Vegas are scorching hot with average highs sitting above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius). Evening weather tends to be a bit cooler with lows in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius). You should definitely bring comfortable, breathable clothes such as shorts, comfortable cotton skirts, and T-shirts. Jeans and trousers are acceptable, but remember that denim and other heavy fabrics in the desert heat can be uncomfortable. If you are planning on seeing a show, you might want to dress up a bit (dresses, or slacks and a nice shirt) and remember, that anytime you go indoors, the air-conditioning will probably be at full blast. Even when it's scorching outside, you might want to bring along a sweater or cover-up if you plan on spending most of your time indoors. Also, pack plenty of sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense sun.

While there is very little chance you'll see any snow, winter in Las Vegas can get cold, especially at night. With low temperatures falling to 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1 degree Celsius), you will sometimes need a heavy jacket. Of course, the casino will be a consistent and comfortable temperature so you will have to shed some layers while sitting at the blackjack table.

In the fall and spring, you will generally be comfortable with summer attire during the day. At night, a pair of jeans or a sweater will keep you warm.

What to Wear at the Clubs

At a Las Vegas nightclub, you'll probably want to look your best and head out in your favorite outfit. However, you should know that dress codes exist in Vegas and you might not be let in if you aren't dressed appropriately. Women can usually dress however they like, but typically evening wear is appropriate (nice dress or slacks and a blouse and heels). For men, the dress code is more straightforward. Many nightclubs won't allow denim, baggy pants, caps, T-shirts, jerseys, or sneakers. If you know which nightclub you want to go to, check ahead to ensure you will be dressed appropriately.

What to Wear at the Casino

Dressing for the Pool

If your swimsuit is very revealing, you might be asked to cover up depending on where you're at. If you are at an adult pool there will not be a problem but in the general pools, you could be asked to cover yourself up by a member of the staff. It might be Las Vegas, but there are some rules when it comes to how much skin you can show. If you're swimming at a hotel pool, cover-ups are recommended (and in some cases required) when walking from your hotel room to the pool.
