We have a 96 T800 with a N14 Cummins that has a intermittent starting issue. We have put new batteries, starter, and a solenoid in it. Sometimes it starts just fine then the next time it will not even crank. When it will not start and we pull start it, it will fire right up. I can hear solenoid clicking when I turn the key to on but nothing when I turn to start. Thanks for any help!

sounds like a ground...start at each terminal and check for corrosion or I have seen the cover sometimes get hot slid or melt between the ground and battery and its always dark and you do not notice

Clean every ground you can find even if they look fine.

I don't know if a t800 would be the same as our w900s but we were having similar problems and in the battery box the are a cluster of wires that send power other places. there is one positive wire that sends power to the cab for everything. one night it messed up going down the road it kept cutting out and then take off again. just happen to be it was dark out and when we started pulling on wires we seen the power cable going to the cab ark because we had the lights on and when we wiggeled the wire it made contact. I would start there checking power cable going to the cab. good luck let us know what you find out

Check the batteries ad at that age I have found cables to be bad. May look good on the out side but if you remove some of the jacket the wire is full of green junk.

Had a t600 do the exact same thing as urs started perfect the first time shut it off for 2 hours went back and didn't even try ended up being ground on the block this was on a 3406E cat but I would venture to guess it's a bad ground good luck mine wasn't much fun to get to

Check all your grounds and clean all your connections including your ground on the stater. Just went thru this on a Western Star, would start good one time than next time would struggle, ended up being the ground on the starter I think.

Isn't there a "primary" solenoid in the battery box on these that can go bad or act up as well?

+1 There is probably a starter relay in the battery box. Our T-800 would just click and not crank intermittently until I replaced that little relay. Solved our problem. Wish I would've tried that before the starter solenoid too. Oh well, just glad I figured it out. KW parts guy knew the one I needed so I took it that they sell a fair number of them.

There is a heavy-10 ga- 2 wire plug in electrical connection between the rear of the head and the firewall. It will relax over time. Taking apart and swishing it with a plier will fix it. It powers the cab/dash. If your dash flashes when up go over rail crossing or other ruff road check here. There also is a solenoid close to plug on firewall take wires off and clean contacts. Both will be under air intake pipe if you have external filters.
