TACKLING INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE ON COLLEGEIn the landscape of college safety, there's a pressing concern that often stays under the radar – intimate partner violence (IPV). While strides have been made in addressing issues like sexual assault on campuses, the prevalence of domestic violence among college students, particularly in the 18 to 24 age group, calls for a broader conversation. As we revisit this topic originally discussed in 2015 and updated in 2023, it's evident that there's more work to be done beyond emergency systems and safety seminars to truly tackle this hidden epidemic. For more information go to: https://lnkd.in/ecruY64a

The 4 most critical aspects of self protection and the prevention of violence are self awareness, behavioral awareness, environmental awareness and situational awareness. In that order of importance.

I have to be honest about something. Working in firearm violence prevention for the past year has taught me many things, but not everything.I understand that it is hard to talk about firearm safety with firearm owners who have strong views and identity/cultural ties to their guns.I understand we have a second amendment.I understand ERPO laws, red flag laws, and how gun laws vary by state. I get it. I’ve done the research. I don’t get this though. The research can’t give me an answer. The fact that both of my alma maters University of North Carolina at Charlotte on the LAST day of class and now University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on the FIRST day of class have experienced death and loss from an active shooter is not only sad, but a true testament to the fact that something HAS to be done.I should not be able to say that my undergraduate and graduate institutions have BOTH been plastered on the news because of senseless, traumatic, and disheartening acts of violence. At this point, when will it end?How many more people have to die?How many more colleges, schools, churches, malls, etc. will be targeted?Honestly, this makes me feel hopeless. Am I the only one?#firearms #chapelhill #violenceprevention

Fantastic article on why we sexual assault awareness and bystander prevention must be taught in high school -- before leaving for college and entering the RED ZONE. And what schools can do about it. Thanks Betsy Smith!"Through my experience working with K-12 school districts, I believe we truly need to educate students on bystander intervention early and often for multiple reasons. First, the students are experiencing sexual harassment (including sexual assault) within their primary and secondary schools. We need to prevent the behaviors there. Second, it is our job to prepare our K-12 students to take the leap when they leave our schools. They need to prepare not only academically for college or the workforce, but also socially and emotionally. We can’t wait until students step on a college campus to teach them to be active bystanders."

Research has repeatedly demonstrated that school attacks are preventable. In fact, the U.S. Secret Service released a report on 67 averted school attacks in 2021, titled Averting Targeted School Violence: A U.S. Secret Service Analysis of Plots Against Schools, that highlights the measures needed to prevent campus attacks. The report emphasizes the importance of schools having a systematic approach to addressing threats. Similar to past investigations, researchers found that high-risk students presented with histories of school discipline, law enforcement contact, being bullied, substance use, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) (NTAC, 2021).
