Our Company - Rivian (2024)

Today we’re operating off hundreds of millions of years of accumulated plant- and animal-based carbon. On our current path, we will fully exhaust this stored energy in only a few generations and, in the process, carbonize our atmosphere to such a degree that life as we know it will not be possible. If the planet is to continue to sustain life and enchant future generations, we have to change.

To build the kind of future our kids and our kids’ kids deserve, extraordinary steps must be taken to stop the carbonization of our atmosphere. This requires individuals and entire industries to come together in ways we never have before to transition the world toward sustainable energy. This is where Rivian’s potential lies — in creating solutions that shift consumer mindsets and inspire other companies to fundamentally change the way they operate.

As staggering as this may sound, and as complex as our objective is, we already have everything we need to create change. It starts with harnessing the very thing every human being is born with: an adventurous spirit. There’s a reason we’re hardwired with curiosity and a capacity to invent better ways of doing things. The part of us that seeks to explore the world is the secret to making sure it remains a world worth exploring. Forever.

Coming together to do more than we can on our own.

Building a collaborative culture is critical for us to deliver on our mission — the complexity of our products and customer ecosystems means that a wide range of skillsets and backgrounds must work closely together to make thousands of decisions every day.

Integrating these decisions into a company-wide sustainability strategy is a foundational step on our path toward net-zero carbon emissions. Rivian has signed the Climate Pledge to reach that goal by 2040 — 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.

We are focused on accurately accounting for the comprehensive impact of our business through transparent impact reporting.

How we design

We design for complete life cycles across everything we do. Our battery packs are designed to be easily removed from our vehicles and either recycled or used in “second life” applications such as stationary storage. The interiors of our vehicles are made from 100% animal-free materials. Dunnage containers at our plant are reusable and made from ocean-bound plastics.

How we operate

We are a network of offices, test labs, experience centers, service centers, charging stations and manufacturing sites, all interconnected by thousands of employees. Our net zero emissions commitment requires us to fully understand the carbon impact associated with our suppliers and service providers as well as our own operations. This drives our decisions and actions – from working on more sustainable raw material supply to aggressively managing our waste generation. Achieving net zero emissions requires us to examine every aspect of our business.

"The scale of the challenge is enormous, but we're lucky to be a part of this — to be able to help solve how we shift our planet’s energy and transportation systems entirely away from fossil fuel."

We’re building for a future that includes everyone.

Our story is about people coming together with one mission in mind: to protect our planet and the cultures that inhabit it for generations to come.

Through our hiring, onboarding, development and rewards, we’re committed to building an inclusive workplace where ideas and innovation flourish and where all individuals feel a true sense of belonging. Breaking up hom*ogeneity by working with people who are different challenges entrenched ways of thinking and encourages greater scrutiny of actions and decisions.

A diverse workforce.

Every day we strive to bring together talented people from a wide variety of specialties and skill sets, backgrounds and experiences: engineering, manufacturing, retail, service and many more. Through a shared, adventurous spirit where we’re energized about our mission and our Compass Values — Come Together, Ask Why, Stay Open, Zoom Out and Over Deliver— we’re able to stay aligned on Forever.

The Belonging Team, a part of the larger People Team, is focused on the activities and practices that enable diversity, equity and inclusion. They connect our Compass Values with our diversity and belonging roadmap.

Embracing active allyship.

Our pledge for today and the future is establishing a culture that thrives on inclusion and equity. We encourage our team members to bring the version of themselves that they feel most comfortable with to work and commit to meeting everyone where they are and finding ways to evolve together.

Grassroots, employee-led Belonging Resource Groups (BRGs) are encouraged as an effort to establish community among people who share lived experiences. These groups include our Rainbow Rivianites, Rivian Women’s Network, Black & African American Group, LatinX Group, Asian Pacific Islander Group, Military Veterans Group and Intersectionality Group.

Employees can join or start BRGs as a way to come together, provide education and engagement, and form alliances in awareness and advocacy across the company. Empathy and openness are a big part of being an ally for each other, and BRGs provide a way to share and receive stories and experiences.

Purpose-driven partnerships.

Representation is meaningless without the ability to listen to and learn from each other and connect on our differences and similarities that break down biases for shared success.
We make it a priority to find committed partners who are making a positive impact in the community. Working with organizations such as Basecamp Outdoor and The Bridge Project and participating in hiring events like the Grace Hopper Celebration further extend our reach to recruit diverse talent.

As part of our efforts to attract a diverse candidate pool and promote science and engineering for women and other underrepresented groups, we have internship programs designed to increase representation. We’ve hosted Tech Talks for women in technology, service and operations and are building relationships with universities including Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

As we continue on our journey, we’ll keep climbing in pursuit of always doing what’s right for our employees, the planet and the next generation. We look forward to providing updates on our progress in our Impact Report, which we plan to publish in 2023 after our first full year of production.
