Presenting a paper today on “crisis leadership and trust repair: think crisis-think female?” at the 40th European Group for Organisational Studies (EGOS) Colloquium in Milan, Italy. In this paper my colleagues, Justin Brienza and Rebecca Langdon, and I examine perceptions of female versus male CEO responses to a corporate crisis (Qantas versus Defence Health). Our results show that organisational reputation, irrespective of CEO gender, plays a key role in determining perceptions of crisis leadership, CEO trustworthiness, and purchase intentions post-crisis CEO apology.

Just finished presenting a paper on dark side leadership at the European Academy of Management, University of Bath. Abstract:Dark side leadership continues to attract growing interest from news media, business authors, and leadership scholars. However, our current understanding suffers from a tendency to ignore the complex relationship between dark triad traits and related leadership behavior. The aim of this article is to examine more complex patterns of dark triad effects on followerand manager perceptions of dark side leadership by combining distinct but conceptually related traits and abilities. The results from a study of 378 frontline leaders, with matching managers and follower teams, indicate that followers of narcissistic leaders with low (versus high) goal driven persistence see them as more self-serving leaders. Similarly, managers of Machiavellian leaders with low (versus high) goal driven persistence see them as moremanipulative leaders. In contrast, followers of psychopathic leaders who can more easily (versus less easily) recognize the perspectives of others see them as less self-serving leaders. The results of this study also help clarify the conceptual relationship between the dark triad and dark side leadership, as reflected by self-serving and manipulative leadership, as opposed to abusive supervision.

How do leaders respond to different types of crises?Given the extraordinary events of recent times, and predictions of more crises to come, we reviewed the last 25 years of crisis leadership research. We found that leaders respond to different types of crises in the following four ways:As shepherds by protecting and guiding employees through financial shocks, pandemics, or natural disasters. As saints by supporting and empowering victims of war or terrorist attacks. As spokespersons by apologizing for product failures, or industrial accidents. As sinners by atoning for scandals arising from fraud, bribery, or sexual transgressions.
