FYI - my testing today shows that the Linux patch will back up the existing version of pcns.jar (and save it as /opt/APC/PowerChute/group1/comp/pcns.3.01.jar), but the Windows version of the patch does NOT back up the existing version. Well, that's not technically accurate. As you can see from the script output above, the first thing it does is create a backup copy (yay!) and the last thing it does is delete the backup copy (boo!).

So for Windows clients, I advise creating a manual backup of your pcns.jar file before running this patch.

I am not sure what you're talking about to be honest. The latest version of PowerChute available is 3.0.1. The only other thing that I think exists for some versions are patches for when you are using it with VMWare ESX or ESXi in some instances. These are available in our knowledge base, if needed. http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/

The only other thing I can imagine is that you are seeing an issue where it is telling you an update is available when there really is not.

If you can provide a screenshot, that might help if what I am saying does not make sense for what you're seeing.

He might be talking about Linux. One of my PCNS clients is a CentOS 5 box, and runs 3.0.1a:

I just checked and am also getting the same error about being unable to contact the update server:

Oooh. OK. Maybe there is an issue with it. I haven't heard anything yet today though. There is no update as far as I know though but I can probably double check tomorrow if it still persists since Bill P. is on vacation today.

@tsai: I just checked and the file I downloaded to my Linux box was PCNS3.0.1aEN.tar.gz. There's apparently also a patch for Windows, but it doesn't appear to update the version number as it does on Linux.

I spoke too soon. The patch at that link WILL update the version number on a windows box. Here's the output from when I just ran the patch file on a Win7 64-bit box:

Stopping the PowerChute Network Shutdown Group1 service.......

PowerChute Network Shutdown Group1 service stopped successfully.

Created a backup copy of the existing pcns.jar file.

Replaced "D:\Program Files\APC\PowerChute\group1\comp\pcns.jar" successfully.

Updated the patch information in the "D:\Program Files\APC\PowerChute\group1" folder.

Starting the PowerChute Network Shutdown Group1 service.......

PowerChute Network Shutdown Group1 service started successfully.

Deleted a backup copy of the existing pcns.jar file.

The PowerChute Network Shutdown v3.0.1a patch has installed successfully.
