Who Dies InThe AvaEnding (Does Camille Kill Her?)

Ava Ending & Sequel Setup Explained: Does Ava [SPOILER]? (1)

The first major death to come in theAvaending is Duke's. He discovers that Simon set him and Ava up to fail by purposefully giving them faulty information. This was meant to ensure Ava died inSaudi Arabia but Simon ordered some extra hits on her after this failed. When Duke attempted to reason with Simon to call it off, citing that Ava is one of their best assets, Simon refuses and sparks a brawl between them. Simons overpowers Duke fairly easily andrecords the death so Ava can see it. His death sends Ava on a bit of a spiral, while Ava killing other assassins sees Simon go after her himself.

Simon and Ava come face-to-face when he sneaks into her hotel room to kill her. The brawl greatly injures both and it nearly comes to a draw due to their similar skill levels. Simonthreatens Ava that he'll kill her if he ever sees her again and leaves as the alarm at the hotel rings. Ava decides to follow Simon anyway and try to put an end to this the best she can. Once she finds Simon, he makes her promise not to go near his family. Ava agrees and shoots Simon in the head.

The very end ofAva leaves her fate up in the air too. After she convinces her family to go start a new life, Ava leaves Judy's apartment with a sense of accomplishment. Although she knows the organization will continue to hunt her in some form, she seems to believe that this isn't an issue right now. However,Ava then shows Simon's daughter Camille (Diana Silvers) is now following Ava. There's no indication that Camille is going to kill Ava at this moment, but she's certainly on her trail.

Ava Sets Up Camille As The Sequel’s Villain

Ava Ending & Sequel Setup Explained: Does Ava [SPOILER]? (2)

With the Avaending showing Camille following the titular assassin, she is clearly positioned to be an antagonist in a possible sequel. There have been no sequel discussions officially, but Taylor and Chastain left the film wide open for another adventure if a studio is interested. Camille is repeatedly shown following Ava throughout the film, as she's even listening in on her mission at the very beginning of the movie. Although Camille doesn't get in on the action too much, as is quickly defeated by Duke when she tries to get involved, she's clearly still in training.Ava 2 could see Camille return as a more formidable fighter and killer to track down the woman responsible for killing her father.

Why Simon Wanted To Kill Ava

The events ofAva hinge entirely on Simon wanting to take out Ava, but what is the reason that he doesn't want her around anymore? She's positioned as the best assassin that the organization has and the decision to neutralize her doesn't appear to be a unanimous decision. Still, it seems Simon believes that Ava is a risk to have around at this point. Camille learned that she is talking to her targets again, which is exactly what she did two years earlier before she had a breakdown. WhileAva doesn't get more specific than that, Simon clearly thinks it would be in everyone's best interests if Ava was no longer around and that whatever she does in the future can't be traced back to them.

Will Ava Have Another Meltdown?

Ava Ending & Sequel Setup Explained: Does Ava [SPOILER]? (4)

Since Ava talking to her targets is tied to her prior meltdown, it is fair to question if a similar situation will unfold in the near future. Ava asking her targets why someone would want them dead is positioned as a moral question throughout the film, with Ava later admitting that she's killed 41 people as a result of this job. That evidently took quite the toll on her in the past and led to the aforementioned breakdown. WithAva showing her doing the same, this could happen again. Furthermore, the third act ofAva shows her break years of sobriety after Duke's death. While she doesn't have a full breakdown right away, the continued use of alcohol and any ethical issues Ava has with her work could collide to cause another breakdown. For what its worth,Ava ends the story with Ava in a fairly stable condition mentally, emotionally, and physically, so perhaps the meltdown will be avoided this time.

What Ava’s Ending Really Means

Ava Ending & Sequel Setup Explained: Does Ava [SPOILER]? (5)

AlthoughAva is an assassin movie filled with death and pain, the ultimate message of the movie is finding happiness in life. There is a sense that this is one of the reasons why Ava questions why she is killing her specific targets. Ava is far from happy at the start of the movie and her relationship with her family couldn't be much worse. Still, the end of the movie revolves around Ava doing what she must to keep them safe and finding peace knowing that they are.

This is connected toAva's continued use of the saying,"Count no man happy until the end is known." Thatquote comes from Greek philosopher and poet Solon and is repeated throughoutAva, including in Duke's post-death letter to Ava. Solon's statement suggests that it is impossible to determine the true happiness of a single person until their life is finished.Even though there are no real signs that Ava has been happy for years, the movie ends with her in a good place. Whether or nother happiness could be determined based on Solon's beliefs,Ava ends with her seemingly happy for the first time in who knows how long.
