Following the success of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, Eiza González helms the all-new sci-fi film Ash, alongside Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul. The space horror-thriller comes from Flying Lotus, a record producer, rapper, DJ, and filmmaker known for previously directing a segment in V/H/S//99, who also composed the original score for the upcoming film. District 9 and Gran Turismo director Neill Blomkamp serves as the executive producer.
Ash tells the story of Riya (González), an astronaut who wakes up on an alien planet and discovers that her entire space station crew has been brutally killed, and she has no memory of the events that led her there. Frightened and alone, Riya sets out to investigate and finds another astronaut named Brion (Paul), who claims to have received her distress signal and that they have a shared purpose. But can Riya trust the stranger and her unknown purpose, and what is the unusual lifeform that the computer keeps warning about? Find out all the answers when Ash arrives this spring.
Per the film’s promos and first looks, Ash gives the impression of a dark, mind-bending space horror thriller that genre fans would not want to miss. The film’s storyline and setting are comparable to well-acclaimed cosmic horror films that leave a lasting impression. As the film arrives in theaters this March, find out when, where, and how you can watch Ash at your local theaters.

Watch the Trailer for ‘Ash’
Released in January 2025, the official trailer of Ash successfully maintains the film’s suspense by not revealing much of the plot. But, from the short clip, we can determine the rising fear and paranoia that will grip the audience as the story unfolds. The two-minute clip zooms through the major events, where Riya wakes up with no memory of who she is, why she is on a strange planet, and what exactly happened, notwithstanding the scrambled flashes of the past. Then she runs into Brion, another astronaut marooned on the planet, who comes to her rescue, and reveals that they have a specific purpose, which is most likely the crux of the story.
The trailer of Ash focuses more on the visual experience of the film, which is distinguished by trippy effects, mind-bending narrative, and hypnotic cinematography. The hard sci-fi elements and stifling atmosphere of Ash are heavily reminiscent of cosmic horror films like Alien and induce fear, intrigue, and shock at the same time.
Three Sci-Fi Horror Movies To Watch Before You See ‘Ash’
Beyond the captivating imagery and spectacular settings, science fiction is not far from horror. It is the fear of the unknown juxtaposed with the fascinating cosmos that has produced sci-fi classics. While Ash seems very inspired by the decades-long Alien franchise, there are several other cosmic horror thrillers like these that you might like to explore before you dive into the world of Ash –
‘Event Horizon’ (1997)

Set in 2047, Paul W.S. Anderson's Event Horizon tells the story of the titular spaceship that went missing on its maiden voyage seven years earlier. When the ship suddenly reappears in the orbit of Neptune, Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) and his team get aboard a rescue vessel to investigate, only to find out that the lost spaceship has returned with sinister forces inhabiting it. On its release, the sci-fi thriller was both a critical and commercial failure. But, over the years, Event Horizon has been cited for significant pop culture references, eventually evolving into a cult classic. The film has also been compared to the survival video game Dead Space, for its great visuals, gripping narrative, and ambitious setup.

‘Pandorum’ (2009)

Directed by German filmmaker, Christian Alvert, Pandorum is often considered Event Horizon's spiritual sequel. It follows astronauts Corporal Bower (Ben Foster) and Lieutenant Payton (Dennis Quaid) who wake up from suspended hibernation on an interstellar ark to discover that the rest of their crewmates are missing. But soon they realize that other people onboard might be a bigger threat than they imagined. Titled after a fictional deep space-induced psychosis, the sci-fi horror film mirrors the setup of Ash where marooned astronauts wake up with memory loss and encounter dangerous entities. Even though Pandorum did not get its due reception at the box office or among critics, the film later earned popularity for its mind-bending narrative on the psychological horrors of deep space exploration. The cosmic horror film also boasts remarkable set design and thrilling action set pieces, with edge-of-the-seat turn of events.

‘High Life’ (2018)

Before films like Tenet and Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson starred in this highly acclaimed sci-fi thriller by French filmmaker, Claire Denis. High Life tells the story of a dangerous space mission gone wrong and the ship’s entire crew gets wiped away, much like the plotline of Ash. Set in deep space, in a future that appears to be present, the film follows a group of criminals serving death sentences who are shipped off toward a black hole to source alternative energy. But when the rest of the crew goes missing, Monte, one of the members, sets out to save his daughter and himself on the isolated ship, where he uncovers sinister motives and dark truths. High Life is an intensely hypnotic and extraordinary space horror thriller that haunts the audience with pressing questions about space exploration, human evolution, and autonomy.
